Hi, I'm Meekail Shaheed, VP of Training and Recruiting at EMT Holdings. Background Investigations is a fairly unique field, and I would like to share a glimpse into the daily life of an investigator.

These professionals play a crucial role in our National Security efforts by verifying the backgrounds of potential or current employees.

This process is essential to protect our country from threats and risks associated with hiring individuals who may have ill intent and/or questionable relationships with people or organizations who pose a threat to our national security.

My path toward becoming a Background Investigator started back in the 80s when I graduated from high school in Bayonne, New Jersey, and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force. This is where I was first exposed to the process of obtaining a TS Security Clearance. I spent the next 21 years serving my country on Active Duty, much of it working in the Intelligence arena with the National Security Agency. During this period, I was privileged to spend some time at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, where I studied multiple Arabic dialects. I also earned my Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from the American Military University. After retiring from the Air Force in 2003, I took on a new challenge as a Deputy Sheriff in Augusta, Georgia. My performance there led to an opportunity to work as a Narcotics Investigator and ultimately, a DEA Task Force Officer.

My Experiences as a Background Investigator

In 2010, I entered the Background Investigations industry, starting at USIS as an Investigator and advancing through roles at Keypoint, Perspecta, and Peraton. I served as the Regional Field Director at Peraton for five years, leading a group of 300 extremely diverse, dedicated, and successful investigators and Field Managers. In the fall of 2023, I made the move to EMT, where I currently serve as Vice President of Training and Recruiting, as well as the Facility Security Officer (FSO) and the Insider Threat Program Security Officer (ITPSO).

At EMT Holdings, our mission is to provide accurate and reliable background investigation services to promote a safer workplace and community. Each investigation is as unique as each person being investigated and every day brings new challenges and opportunities. Join me as I walk you through a typical day in this fascinating field.

The Role of a Background Investigator

Background Investigators are responsible for conducting thorough and detailed checks on individuals to verify their qualifications, history, and suitability for specific roles, especially in sensitive or high-security positions. Their work involves a mix of research, interviews, and analysis to ensure that the information provided by candidates is accurate and complete.

The Process: Day-to-Day

A typical day for a Background Investigator starts with creating a strategic plan for the day; briefing your cases; and scheduling your interviews and appointments. The investigator then hits the field and conducts field interviews, gathers records, and types/transmits reports.

After the investigator transmits a case, it is reviewed for accuracy by a team of reviewers and then passed on to the customer for an additional review and the adjudication decision.

Pros of Being an Investigator
  • Independence

  • Investigators are responsible for managing their own schedules. The job is flexible and accommodates varying work and personal schedules.

  • Each case is unique so each day is unique!

Cons of Being an Investigator
  • Investigators often work alone versus the office/workplace environment that some are used to.

  • Investigators are not privy to the final adjudication of a case so they rarely get to see the final outcome of the investigations they complete.

Challenges of Being an Investigator
  • An Investigator has to be extremely organized, a master of time management, and tenacious in obtaining the required coverage for the case while ensuring that the investigation is completed promptly.

Rewards of Being an Investigator
  • The most profound reward is knowing that your hard work is crucial to promoting and maintaining national security!

Shaheed’s Success Strategies

Be a Critical Thinker

Remember that interview guides are just that…guides. Do not hesitate to ask appropriate probing questions when you interview. Remember that you are looking for the Bad Actor…the needle in the haystack.

Do Not Compromise the Integrity of an Investigation for Time’s Sake

Each investigation has a deadline, however, if you need an extra day or so to ensure a thorough investigation, ask for it!

Never Forget the Mission

You are much more than a number. In many cases, the Background Investigator is our first and last line of defense in ensuring that we are granting security clearances to the right people. Don’t minimize your importance!

Have Fun!

The position comes with a lot of built-in stressors. Take time to relax and ensure that you have activities outside of work. At the end of the day, turn your computer OFF and step away.
